In my experience.. - Blog 07

When comparing my writing experience with Helen Keller’s I first think about how easy it is to write something in my case. For example, I can type something up on my MacBook in five minutes and  completely hate it, erase it, and have something brand new and a lot better in a total of 10 minutes. In Helen’s case she would have to type it by feeling the keys of a typewriter. She also could not just read through her piece and decide it didn’t express her thoughts.

We are also able to write an experience out on paper as soon as it happens to us. We can use this information to later tell someone about it or write it up in the form of an essay comparing it to other experiences. Helen being from another century did not get this option, she could not type something into her computer, save it, and open it a week later to add something new or make a change.

In a sense you can say we have it “easy.” We are able to type our document up, review, edit, and format it. We can then email it to a friend for more review and a different perspective and make more changes. Technology has given us the ability of pursuing better writing.

Of course in Helen’s case it wasn’t just the technology she had to do without. Being deaf and blind she could not read and absorb information in the same fashion we do. Her writing experiences would have had more learning and absorbing concepts, in my opinion. In comparing my experience with Helen’s, I have realized to not take technology in the form of writing for granted in the way I do.
